The Detroit techno legend looks back over his mammoth career

Jeff Mills launched the Director’s Cut series at the start of 2019 as an opportunity to reflect on the hugely influential catalogue he has released on his Axis label since 1992. As one of the undisputed masters of Detroit techno, Mills has consistently broken new ground in the genre, but his releases on Axis throughout the 90s and beyond set a benchmark still followed by DJs and producers the world over.

In celebration of the release of this project, Mills is going to be returning to the medium he honed his craft on as he delivers a rare vinyl set for his appearance at Contact. These days Mills more commonly uses CDJs in his sets, but his highly technical mixing style was honed during his early years as The Wizard, cutting up progressive rock, funk and electro records in the 80s. As he reflects on some of the truly classic pieces in his repertoire, he will equally be reflecting on the particular craftsmanship required to juggle three record decks.

Joining in on the night will be another techno legend, Ken Ishii, who will be in an especially celebratory mood as he anticipates the release of his new album featuring a number of collaborations with Mills.
