1993年、伝説的な〈Warp Records〉からプロデューサーとしてデビュー。これを皮切りに、90年代にはイギリスの〈Paper Recordings〉〈D.i.Y Discs/Strictly 4 Groovers〉イタリアの〈D-vision〉といった独創的なハウスミュージック・レーベルから次々にレコードをリリース。2006年にはロンドンに拠点を置くレーベル〈Bear Funk〉と活動を開始。3枚のソロアルバムをリリース。
2010年には、〈Is It Balearic? Recordings〉からの2ndシングルを発表。この12インチに収録にされた20分にも及ぶ壮大なメイントラック「Panorama Suite」は高い評価を得て、作曲家・プロデューサーとしての名声を確立することとなった。翌年の11年には「Feel It In Your Body」をリリース。この作品はAndrew Weatherallによるサポートを受け、B面に収録された「Heartache」は、ニューヨークの伝説的なDJであるDavid Mancusoをはじめ、その他大勢のDJのプレイリストに掲載された。
2008年に日本に移住してからは毎週末、様々なクラブでDJとしてプレイ。2013年には、アメリカ各地でのツアーを行い、翌年は7月から8月にかけてヨーロッパ・アメリカツアーを行う傍ら、スタジオワークでも様々なレーベルからリリース。
2015年にアルバム「Vacations Never Taken」をビクターより発売。同年にブラジル、インドネシア、ベトナムへのツアーも敢行。 今まで発表した作品は、シングル約30枚、アルバム5枚、プロデュース4枚、リミックスワークでは50枚以上にも及ぶ。

Max Essa has been active as a DJ and producer since the early 90s, initially releasing music on labels such as Warp Records and Paperecordings and DJing alongside the infamous D.i.Y Sound System.
His later work, for labels like Is It Balearic? Recordings, went on to be play-listed by legends such as Andrew Weatherall and David Mancuso, gaining him a devoted following and DJ bookings around the world.
Albums for the Japanese major label, Victor Entertainment (‘Vacations Never Taken’ 2015) and Music For Dreams (‘Lanterns’ 2018), plus EPs for the Italian label, Hell Yeah! Recordings and a constant stream of remixes, have shown him to be a deeply imaginative and prolific producer.
For the past decade Max has held two DJ residencies in Tokyo, Lone Star at the legendary, Bar Bonobo with Ken Hidaka and Dr Rob (Ban Ban Ton Ton) and Fridays at the ever-popular Aoyama Tunnel. He also plays regularly at clubs and events all over Japan, from Hokkaido to Okinawa. He has been very busy in the studio throughout 2021 and has a string of releases lined up for 2022!
