Formed by Paul Purgas and James Ginzburg in 2005 to explore an architectural corner of sound art, Emptyset make their way to Contact. The duo carved out mercilessly intricate sonic sculptures to critical acclaim. Recent years, they have been conducting introspective projects at various sites like Tate Modern and a decommissioned nuclear power plant in attempt to focus on the energy of silence and a new relationship between instrumentation and players. At this year’s “Borders,” their once-complex sound processing approach takes a back seat in favour of simply hitting objects to render the lurking sonic elements of their environments into intense auditory phenomena. The question on everyone’s mind is “what sound will Emptyset see in Contact?” Intertwined with a surrounding environment, the pair will deliver a must-see thrilling performance. Also lined up is an experimental array of domestic acts: ENA, YPY, Yosuke Yukimatsu, Killer Bong and Wata Igarashi. Prepare yourself for an innovative night that sets off to uncharted sonic territory.
