A gallery project for the exhibition of works set in a club environment
Imaginary Line」, staged in club Contact Tokyo, is an exhibition with a curation of artists who have lived since the birth of computer and digital technology.
Clubs, mainly opening its doors during the night, have existed as a social place to enjoy music. However, the current situation, with the daytime hours being closed, leaves a blank period during closed hours. We have decided to try and utilize that window period to hold our gallery exhibitions.
Using a club as a gallery space is not something new. One prime example is「Berghain」, a club in Berlin, Germany. With clubs not being able to operate as usual amid pandemic, using the club as a gallery has attracted those who do not dance.
The curator for this occasion, JACKSON kaki, took a 3DCG scan of Shibuya’s live house WWW last year and created a virtual stage with 3 artists and visual installation for the live streaming event AVYSS GAZE.
In this exhibition, based on past examples, we exhibit works of various forms that transcend the boundaries of “club/gallery” to create an alternative space.
Imaginary Line also provides a platform for artists to participate via the Internet. The common ground that it shares is the「sensation of computer/digital technology onward」.
In order for us to live and face reality, we have look at space/media created by computer/digital technology as a virtual space. 仮想 (imagination/virtuality) refers to “assume temporarily”. Computer/Digital technology allows us to render and build our images as if they exist. At the same time, through the use of Internet platforms, it makes it easy to distribute those images. In contrast to the convenience of virtual space where we have the ability to extend our remarks with no physical constraints, the reality is that we live in a society that coexists with various constraints and inconveniences.
However, its constraints and inconveniences are not easy to reproduce in virtual space. That reason is why reality becomes the reality.
We’ve gathered curated works focusing on the senses born in such reality.
