Shing02が来日。GEZANとの初のツーマン
閉館まで5日のカウントダウンを数えるStudio Xで、Shing02とGEZANの共演が実現。およそ2年10ヶ月ぶりの来日となる孤高Shing02と、国内シーンに大きな変化をもたらす革命軍GEZANとの、予想だにしていなかったツーマンが決まった。
Shing02の名盤「緑黄色人種」がこの世に産み落とされてから23年。その翌年、Nujabesのビートに乗せた、“音楽の女神に宛てて”書いた手紙「Luv(sic)」はヒップホップの歴史のひとつのモニュメントとして今も燦然と輝きを放ち続けている。さらにいうと、Shing02の作品にはいずれも、風化することのない普遍的でアブストラクトなスタイルが見て取れ、初めて聴くティーンのヘッズはリリース年に驚くかもしれない。Shing02は、15歳で渡米後、QbertやDJ Shadow、D-STYLES、Shortkutといった、今でこそのレジェンドがひしめき合うベイエリアで音楽基盤を形成している。近年は、作品ごとに違うプロデューサーと共同し、常にビートとラップにおける深部の探求とフレッシュなアプローチを繰り返してきた。6月には、Netflixから配信されたSFアニメーション『スプリガン』のエンディングテーマのラップ/作詞を担当、全世界配信のスタンダードに合わせるための、Netflix側からリクエストであがったのがShing02の名前だった。内的な熱を宿す抑制されたフロウと、巧妙なリリック、明瞭なラップの中でみせる、世界における日本人としての自分と、それに付随するリアリティ。フロアを支配する絶対的なスキルと、どこか我々の琴線に触れながら流れるスペシャルな時間に身を委ねたい。
強い連帯とバンド内での共通認識がもたらす、音の結束感はGEZANの大きな特徴と言える。オーディエンスになだれ込むサウンドのかたまりと、ステージ上にある精神性、押し込まれるほどの音に対して引き込まれるような優しさは、この日も、音楽の喜びとともに、固く凝った我々の心をほぐし解いてくれる。日本のロックシーンの最高峰でありながらも、最深部を住処にするオルタナティブロックバンドは、独創性に溢れる圧倒的なライヴと、音楽の種類を限定することのない様々なアーティストとの共鳴で、ファンに驚きと感動を与えてきた。誰もが予測していなかったこの共演も、今までもがそうであったように、両者の見たこともない科学反応を引き出す可能性を期待せずにはいられない。
カテゴライズという概念を超えた音楽の核に触れ合う、一種のスリルをともなった最高峰の交わり。5日後に扉を閉ざすStudio Xで交わされる両者の対話は、新しい何かの重要な始まりになる気がしてならない。
Shing02 comes to Japan for first two-man live with GEZAN
Shing02 and GEZAN share the stage with only 5 days left until Contact closes its doors for good. The one and only Shing02 returns to Japan for the first time in close to 3 years. Sharing the stage is the revolutionary GEZAN, the band that has dramatically changed the local scene.
23 years have passed since the release of Shing02’s infamous record 「緑黄色人種」(Homo Caeruleus Cerinus). The following year, he wrote「Luv(sic)」on top of a beat produced by Nujabes, a letter “to the goddess of music”, a monumental work in the history of hip hop that still stand the test of time. At the age of 15, Shing02 moved to the Bay Area and began to build his foundation in music along with the likes of now legends Qbert, DJ Shadow, D-STYLES, and Shortkut. One of his most recent works is the ending theme song for the sci-fi anime series『スプリガン』(Spriggan) that debuted on Netflix in June. The restrained flow of his internal fire that’s articulated through his clever lyrics can be said to come from his Japanese roots and the fundamental nature of reality. His skill and ability to take control of the floor is bound leave us with a special moment in time that tugs at our heartstrings.
GEZAN is an alternative rock band that stays true to the underground while being one of the top in Japan’s rock scene. They have continued to astonish and move fans through heir live performances that are empowering and filled with originality, not limiting themselves to specific genres, and collaborating various artists. The two sharing the same stage is something probably no one had expected, and will be chance to see some magic in the making.
